And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years, give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination.
Abu Ḥurayrah reported that a person came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: "Who amongst the people deserves the best treatment from me?" He said: Your mother. He again asked: Then who (is the next one)? He said: Again, it is your mother. He said: Then who? He (the Messenger ﷺ) said: Again, it is your mother. He (again) asked: Then who? Thereupon (the Messenger ﷺ) said: Then it is your father.1
This narration is proof that the love and compassion one has for the mother should be three times more than that for the father. This is because the Messenger (ﷺ) repeated the mother three times, then He (ﷺ) mentioned the father. If one reflects here, it becomes clear why the mother was mentioned first, three times. This is because of the hardship the mother endures during pregnancy, giving birth and breastfeeding. The mother in these three stages, in essence, physically goes through this alone. Allāh, The Most High said:
“His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years”
