Fasting narrows and weakens the activity of Shayṭān who circulates in the body like blood.

Allāh the Most high said:

 يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ ‎﴿١٨٣﴾‏

"O you who believe fasting has been prescribed for you like it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become pious and righteous"
[al-Baqarah, 2:183]

Indeed, fasting is from the greatest means of attaining piety and righteousness because within fasting is the compliance with Allah's orders and the avoidance of his prohibitions. The angles in which taqwá (piety and righteousness) are found within fasting are as follows:

  1. The fasting person leaves that which Allāh has prohibited from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse and its likes that the self is usually inclined to (between dawn and sunset in Ramaḍān); Seeking nearness to Allāh and hoping to get reward from Him. This is indeed from the characteristics of piety.
  2. The fasting person trains himself in having watchfulness of Allāh. In that he leaves that which he desires even when he has the ability to fulfil it. This is because he is aware that Allāh is watching his every move.
  3. Fasting narrows and weakens the activity of Shayṭān who circulates in the body like blood. [It is said that this similitude is mentioned due to the intricacy of the devil's evil whispers, and its flowing into the victim's heart. (Al-Mihāj Sharḥ Ṣaḥiḥ Muslim:14/157)]. Fasting weakens the devil's activities. In this, the sins of the fasting person are reduced.
  4. The dominant activity of the fasting person is the act of obedience to Allāh (fasting, night prayer, supplications, remembrance of Allāh and giving in charity). Indeed, from the characteristics of the pious is the implementation of acts of obedience.
  5. The wealthy and financially stable person; when they fast, by default, they taste the pangs of hunger experienced by the poor. By this, they have more compassion for the poor and destitute hence giving more in charity. This is also from the qualities of piety and righteousness.
